The story begins just before dawn. As the sky turns yellow, the birds\u2014Touracos, blackbirds, and thrushes\u2014start their morning songs. The zoo staff, including Mike, Jeremy, and Stephen, arrive to begin their daily routine. They clean the cages, scatter fresh sawdust, and check on the animals. The gorillas are let out of their cages, behaving like excited children going to school.<\/p>\n

As the day progresses, the zoo becomes busy. We meet Etam<\/strong>, the Black Celebes Ape, who clings to the wire, showing his teeth in a greeting. In the Reptile House<\/strong>, snakes stare with lidless eyes, and frogs make gulping sounds. At 10 o\u2019clock, the gates open, and the first rush of visitors arrives. The zoo staff must remain alert to ensure that visitors do not hurt the animals, as humans can sometimes be the most dangerous animals in the zoo!<\/p>\n

Finally, the evening comes. The visitors leave, and the animals are fed and put back into their cages for the night. The sun fades, and the robin sings its closing song. As night falls, the zoo becomes silent, except for the occasional cry of a bird or the gaze of an owl. The narrator lies in bed, listening to the lions cough, knowing the zoo is sleeping.<\/p>\n
