English Summary

The zoo is now bustling with activity. Mike and Jeremy are busy cleaning the gorilla cages, sweeping up the mess, and scattering fresh white sawdust. The animals are excited and eager for the new day.

We are introduced to Etam, the Black Celebes Ape, who clings to the wire and bares his teeth in a friendly greeting. Upstairs, the parrots create a loud noise (cacophony), and Suku, the grey parrot, proudly claims, “I’m a very fine bird.”

Next is the Reptile House, which is kept at a pleasant temperature of eighty degrees. Here, snakes stare with lidless eyes, frogs make gulping sounds, and lizards lie lazily over rocks.

At ten o’clock, the gates open, and visitors rush in. The staff must be extremely alert—not to protect people from animals, but to protect animals from people! Some uncivilized visitors try to throw stones, prod animals with sticks, or even give dangerous items like lighted cigarettes and razor blades to chimpanzees.

এরপর আসা যাক সরীসৃপ কক্ষে (Reptile House), যার তাপমাত্রা আরামদায়ক ৮০ ডিগ্রিতে রাখা হয়। এখানে সাপেরা চোখের পাতাহীন (lidless) চোখে তাকিয়ে থাকে, ব্যাঙেরা ঢোক গেলার শব্দ করে এবং টিকটিকিরা পাথরের ওপর আলসেমিতে শুয়ে থাকে।

সকাল দশটায় গেট খোলে এবং দর্শনার্থীদের ভিড় ঢুকে পড়ে। কর্মীদের তখন খুব সতর্ক (alert) থাকতে হয়—মানুষকে বাঁচানোর জন্য নয়, বরং মানুষকে দিয়ে প্রাণীদের ক্ষতি করা আটকাতে! কিছু অসভ্য দর্শক প্রাণীদের দিকে পাথর ছোড়ে, লাঠি দিয়ে খোঁচা দেয় (prod), এমনকি শিম্পাঞ্জিদের জ্বলন্ত সিগারেট বা ব্লেড দেওয়ারও চেষ্টা করে।
