English Summary

After the lady went up to the roof, the conductor pulled the bell, and the bus started moving. He stood triumphant, even though the passengers criticized him to his face. Suddenly, the bus developed engine trouble. While the conductor and driver were busy fixing it for a long time, the lady quietly stole down the stairs and re-entered the bus.

When the engine was fixed, the conductor returned and saw the dog again. He immediately pulled the bell, and the whole struggle began all over again. The lady was forced to go back to the top. Finally, the bus became empty, leaving only the narrator and the conductor.

The conductor tried to justify himself, saying he had his rules. The narrator explained that while some rules (like the rule of the road) are “hard and fast” to prevent danger to life and limb, others are only for guidance. Rules like the one about dogs are meant for the comfort of passengers. They should be observed in the spirit (the intention), not just the letter (the exact words). The narrator advised him to mix rules with a little good will and common sense. The conductor accepted the advice and wished the narrator “good night” amiably.

ভদ্রমহিলা ছাদে যাওয়ার পর বাস চলতে শুরু করে। কন্ডাক্টর বিজয়ীর মতো দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে, যদিও যাত্রীরা তার মুখের ওপরই তার সমালোচনা করছিল। হঠাৎ বাসে যান্ত্রিক গোলযোগ (engine trouble) দেখা দেয়। যখন কন্ডাক্টর বাস ঠিক করতে ব্যস্ত ছিল, ভদ্রমহিলা চুপিচুপি নিচে নেমে এসে আবার বাসে বসেন।
