English Summary

Facing the tiger, Bhola Grandpa instantlyclimbed up a nearby banyan tree. The tiger roared and circled the tree about a hundred times before settling down under a bush to keep watch. The whole night passed with the tiger beating its tail on the dry leaves.

When dawn broke with the cooing of doves, Bhola Grandpa simply forgot about the tiger! He climbed down and walked up to a group of men on a nearby mound to ask for some water. One of the men, who had seen the tiger waiting, was bewildered (confused). He asked, “What is your secret that you simply walked past the hungrybeast and it did nothing?”

At that moment, the tiger stretched its limbs and yawned. Bhola Grandpa looked at the tiger, remembered everything, and almost fainted in fear. He ran back home.

The story ends on a humorous yet sad note. Half a century later, Bhola Grandpa passed away at the age of ninety-five. His eighty-year-old wife lamented his death but made a funny remark typical of the story’s theme: “The old man must have forgotten to breathe.”

বাঘের মুখোমুখি হয়ে ভোলা দাদু তৎক্ষণাৎ কাছের একটি বটগাছে উঠে পড়লেন। বাঘটি গর্জন করল এবং গাছটির চারপাশে প্রায় একশোবার চক্কর দিয়ে একটি ঝোপের নিচে ওৎ পেতে বসে রইল। সারা রাত ধরে দাদু বাঘের লেজ ঝাপটানোর শব্দ শুনতে পাচ্ছিলেন।

ভোরবেলা যখন ঘুঘু পাখির ডাক শোনা গেল, ভোলা দাদু বাঘের কথা বেমালুম ভুলে গেলেন! তিনি গাছ থেকে নেমে কাছেই একটি ঢিবির ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা একদল লোকের কাছে গিয়ে খাবার জল চাইলেন। ওই দলের একজন লোক বাঘটিকে অপেক্ষা করতে দেখেছিল। সে দাদুকে দেখে হতভম্ব (bewildered) হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করল, “আপনার রহস্যটা কী? আপনি ওই ক্ষুধার্ত পশুটার পাশ দিয়ে হেঁটে চলে এলেন আর সে কিছুই করল না?”

ঠিক তখন বাঘটি আড়মোড়া ভাঙছিল এবং হাই তুলছিল। দাদু বাঘটির দিকে তাকালেন, সব কথা মনে পড়ল এবং ভয়ে তিনি প্রায় জ্ঞান হারালেন। তিনি এক দৌড়ে বাড়ি পালালেন।
