All About a Dog Summary (Part 1)

English Summary

The narrator was travelling in a bus on a bitterly cold night. The wind was cutting like a knife. When the bus stopped, two women and a man got in and filled the empty seats. The younger woman was carrying a little Pekinese dog.

The conductor came in to take their fares. As soon as he saw the beady-eyed dog, the narrator knew trouble was coming. The conductor seemed to be a person who was angry at everything (had a general grievance), especially at passengers who sat comfortably inside while he shivered at the door.

He saw this as an opportunity and ordered the woman, “You must take that dog out.” The woman refused firmly, saying she would not do it and offered her name and address instead. The conductor insisted it was his order. The woman argued that going to the opentop of the bus in such weather would kill her. Her companions supported her, saying the demand was “nonsense” and that she already had a cough.

Bengali Summary (অংশ ১: বিবাদের সূত্রপাত)

লেখক একটি বাসে ভ্রমণ করছিলেন। রাতটি ছিল হাড়কাঁপানো ঠান্ডা এবং বাতাস ছুরির মতো গায়ে বিঁধছিল। বাস থামলে তিনজন যাত্রী (দুজন মহিলা ও একজন পুরুষ) বাসে ওঠেন। কম বয়সী মহিলাটির কোলে একটি ছোট পেকিনিজ কুকুর ছিল।

কন্ডাক্টর ভাড়া নিতে এসে কুকুরটিকে দেখামাত্রই লেখক বুঝতে পারলেন যে ঝামেলা হতে চলেছে। কন্ডাক্টরটি ছিল এমন স্বভাবের মানুষ যার সবকিছুর ওপরই রাগ বা ক্ষোভ থাকে। বিশেষ করে যাত্রীরা যখন আরামে বাসে বসে থাকে আর সে দরজায় দাঁড়িয়ে শীতে কাঁপে, তখন তার রাগ আরও বেড়ে যায়।

কন্ডাক্টর হুকুম দিল, “আপনাকে কুকুরটি বের করে দিতে হবে।” মহিলাটি স্পষ্ট জানিয়ে দিলেন যে তিনি তা করবেন না, প্রয়োজনে তিনি তাঁর নাম-ঠিকানা দেবেন। কিন্তু কন্ডাক্টর নাছোড়বান্দা। মহিলাটি যুক্তি দিলেন যে এই হাড়কাঁপানো শীতে বাসের খোলা ছাদে গেলে তিনি মারা যাবেন। তাঁর সঙ্গীরাও তাঁকে সমর্থন করে বললেন যে এটা পাগলামি, কারণ তাঁর এমনিতেই কাশি হয়েছে।
