English Summary

The conductor pulled the bell, and the bus stopped. He stepped onto the pavement, feeling triumphant because the law was on his side. The bus would not move until the dog was removed. All the passengers supported the lady, calling the conductor’s behavior “shameful” and threatening to call the police.

Ironically, the little dog sat blinking at the dim lights, completely unconscious of the trouble he had caused. The passengers demanded their fares back, but the conductor refused. Some passengers got tired of waiting and disappeared into the night. Even the last bus on the road passed by, indifferent to their shouts.

A policeman strolled up, but instead of helping the passengers, he said genially that the conductor had his rules to follow. The conductor walked back and forth like a captain who had won a victory. Finally, realizing there was no other way, the young lady agreed to go to the top of the bus, even though her companion warned her that she would catch pneumonia.

Bengali Summary ( অচলাবস্থা ও নিয়মের জয়)

কন্ডাক্টর বেল বাজাল এবং বাস থেমে গেল। সে ফুটপাথে নেমে বিজয়ীর মতো দাঁড়িয়ে রইল, কারণ সে জানত আইন তার পক্ষে। কুকুরটিকে বের না করা পর্যন্ত বাস চলবে না। বাসের সব যাত্রী ভদ্রমহিলার পক্ষ নিল। তারা কন্ডাক্টরের এই আচরণকে “লজ্জাজনক” বলল এবং পুলিশ ডাকার হুমকি দিল।

মজার ব্যাপার হলো, যার জন্য এত কাণ্ড, সেই ছোট্ট কুকুরটি ম্লান আলোর দিকে তাকিয়ে পিটপিট করছিল। সে বুঝতেই পারছিল না যে তার জন্য এত বড় ঝামেলা হচ্ছে। যাত্রীরা তাদের ভাড়া ফেরত চাইল, কিন্তু কন্ডাক্টর তা দিতে অস্বীকার করল। বিরক্ত হয়ে কিছু যাত্রী বাস থেকে নেমে অন্ধকারে মিলিয়ে গেল। রাস্তার শেষ বাসটিও যাত্রীদের চিৎকারে কান না দিয়ে পাশ কাটিয়ে চলে গেল।

একজন পুলিশ এল, কিন্তু সে যাত্রীদের সাহায্য করার বদলে হাসিমুখে (genially) জানাল যে কন্ডাক্টর তার নিয়মই পালন করছে। কন্ডাক্টর বিজয়ীর মতো পায়চারি করতে লাগল। শেষে আর কোনো উপায় না দেখে ভদ্রমহিলাটি বাসের ছাদে যেতে রাজি হলেন, যদিও তাঁর সঙ্গী তাকে সাবধান করলেন যে এতে তাঁর নিউমোনিয়া হয়ে যেতে পারে।
