Manoj Das (1934–2021) was a famous Indian writer who wrote in both Odia and English. In this text, he narrates the hilarious adventures of an old man named Bhola Grandpa, seen through the eyes of a young narrator. The story highlights Bhola Grandpa’s simplicity and his amusing inability to distinguish between reality and dreams.

Part 1: The LostGrandson

The story begins with a description of Bhola Grandpa living at the western end of the village under a bokal tree inhabited by monkeys. The first major incident occurs on a moonlit night while returning from a festival. Bhola Grandpa suddenly realizes that the grandson he was holding onto has slipped away! The funny search ends when the boy is found taking shelter under a cow’s belly.

Part 2: The Pirate Dream & The Tiger Encounter

In the second part, Bhola Grandpa creates chaos on a rainy afternoon by claiming he saw pirates burying treasure on the seashore. After a long, fruitless search by the villagers past midnight, he confesses it was just a midday dream! Later, the story moves to the Sunderbans, where Bhola Grandpa accidentally walks too close to a Royal Bengal Tiger, hearing its growl just five yards behind him.

Part 3: The Escape & The Final Humour

The final part describes Bhola Grandpa’s miraculous escape. He climbs a banyan tree and spends the night there while the tiger circles below. In the morning, he simply forgets about the tiger and walks past it! The bewildered spectators are shocked. The story concludes with Bhola Grandpa’s death at the age of ninety-five, where his wife humorously remarks that he must have “forgotten to breathe.”
