A Day in the Zoo Summary (Part 3)

English Summary

Towards evening, the crowd of visitors thins out. The sun’s rays become slanting, lighting up the cages of the crowned pigeons. As the light fades, the robin stops singing and flies to the mimosa tree to rest.

Now, the night animals wake up. The white-faced owls, which looked like grey tree stumps all day, open their largegolden eyes. Shadows creep over the gardens. Suddenly, loud noises come from the chimpanzees’ bedroom—they are quarreling over straw for their beds.

Finally, night falls. As the narrator lies in bed, he watches the moon rising above the trees. He hears the lions cough. The zoo sleeps, but soon it will be dawn again, and the birds will start their song, continuing the cycle of life.

Bengali Summary (অংশ ৩: সন্ধ্যা ও রাত)

সন্ধ্যার দিকে দর্শনার্থীদের ভিড় কমে আসে (thins out)। সূর্যের তির্যক (slanting) রশ্মি ঝুঁটিওয়ালা পায়রাদের খাঁচায় পড়ে। আলো ম্লান হওয়ার সাথে সাথে রবিন পাখি গান থামায় এবং মিমোসা গাছে বিশ্রাম নিতে উড়ে যায়।

এখন নিশাচর প্রাণীরা জেগে ওঠে। সাদা মুখওয়ালা পেঁচারা, যারা সারাদিন ধূসর গাছের গুঁড়ির মতো সেজে ছিল, এখন তাদের বড় সোনালী চোখ খোলে। বাগানে ছায়া নেমে আসে। হঠাৎ শিম্পাঞ্জিদের ঘর থেকে চিৎকার শোনা যায়—তারা বিছানার খড় (straw) নিয়ে ঝগড়া করছে।

অবশেষে রাত নামে। লেখক বিছানায় শুয়ে জানলা দিয়ে দেখেন চাঁদ গাছের আড়াল থেকে বেরিয়ে আসছে। তিনি সিংহের কাশির শব্দ শুনতে পান। চিড়িয়াখানা এখন ঘুমন্ত, কিন্তু শীঘ্রই আবার ভোর (dawn) হবে এবং পাখিদের গানে নতুন দিন শুরু হবে।
