আর. কে. নারায়ণের লেখা ‘ফাদার্স হেল্প’ গল্পের প্রথম অংশটি (Unit 1) একটি খুব পরিচিত দৃশ্য দিয়ে শুরু হয়। সোমবার সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠে স্বামীনাথনের মনে হয়, এই তো কিছুক্ষণ আগেই শুক্রবার ছিল! ছুটির দিনগুলো কত দ্রুত কেটে যায় এবং আবার সেই একঘেয়ে স্কুল জীবন শুরু হয়। স্বামী স্কুলে যেতে চায় না, তাই সে প্রথমে অজুহাত দেয় যে তার মাথাব্যথা করছে।
স্বামীর মা স্বভাবতই দয়ালু। তিনি স্বামীকে বাড়িতে বিশ্রাম নেওয়ার অনুমতি দেন। কিন্তু বিপত্তি ঘটে যখন স্বামীর বাবা বিষয়টি জানতে পারেন। বাবা বেশ কড়া মেজাজের মানুষ। তিনি কোনো অজুহাত শুনতে রাজি নন। তিনি স্বামীকে পরিষ্কার জানিয়ে দেন যে রবিবার বেশি ঘোরাঘুরি না করলে সোমবার মাথাব্যথা করত না। যখন মাথাব্যথার অজুহাত কাজে এল না, স্বামী তখন নতুন কৌশল নিল—সে বলল এখন স্কুলে গেলে দেরি হয়ে যাবে।
দেরি হওয়ার কারণ হিসেবে স্বামী তার শিক্ষক স্যামুয়েলের কথা বলে। সে বাবাকে জানায় যে স্যামুয়েল খুব রাগী শিক্ষক, বিশেষ করে যারা দেরিতে ক্লাসে ঢোকে তাদের তিনি খুব বকাবকি করেন। স্বামী বাবাকে এটাও বলে যে প্রধান শিক্ষকও নাকি স্যামুয়েলকে ভয় পান। স্বামীর এই মিথ্যা এবং অতিরঞ্জিত কথাগুলো বাবাকে থামাবে নাকি পরিস্থিতি আরও জটিল করবে, সেটাই আমরা পরবর্তী অংশে দেখব। আপাতত, এই অংশের কুইজটি দিয়ে নিজেকে যাচাই করে নাও।
